PostSubject: Background - The Murloc's Story   Background - The Murloc's Story I_icon_minitimeThu Jul 26, 2012 6:13 am

The Murlocs have lived in Darkshore for aeons; it is their homeland, their place of ancestry. Their children will be born here and their parents nurtured them here. All they have ever known is the sweet touch of the Darkshore tide and the abundant supply of fish just off the coast. Very little changed in this location for thousands of years, until the Cataclysm.

When the Cataclysm hit, the Naga came, and with them, the Murloc’s world was turned upside down. The fish stocks were now split between two races, one more demanding than the other. The tides were patrolled by the Naga, and the Murlocs had to plan their outings to avoid encounters. Things were controllable at first, but over time the situation became more and more serious.

The fish supplies continued to dwindle and eventually the Murloc fishermen had to begin fishing further out to sea in order to find a decent catch. This meant closing in on the Naga settlement, and the Murlocs had to exercise continual caution when in their once-beloved waves.

It was shortly after these fish stocks dwindled that the first attack took place. The Naga invaded during the night and began to kill Murlocs at will. They plundered the Murloc’s fish supplies and took everything they could use. The elderly were killed and the women and children taken. A small band of Murlocs took up arms and began to fight back, choosing to use nets and pikes that were once used for fishing in order to slay the sea-serpents.

This worked, beating back the Naga and temporarily slowing the deaths and bringing a halt to the captures. This small band of Murlocs became known throughout the village as a group of hero’s, a group that was fighting for the Murloc’s freedom and that was, for now, having positive results. This band of hero’s fought the Naga and slowly grew in size, training the tadpoles in order to prepare them for the future struggle.

The Naga also started to grow their forces, though, and more sea-witches began to be trained, adding further strain to the Murloc’s defence. This was now, undoubtedly, a war. The Murlocs happened upon another small village to the North that also seemed to have been suffering from the Naga, and more of the fish-men joined the band of defenders.

They even happened upon a large, almost grotesque Murloc that only sought to help the group. It could fight three times the normal number of attackers, and carry almost twice the weight, and with this aid, the Murlocs once again began to gain a stronghold in the land. The Naga were driven back altogether, and for a month or more there was no conflict as the two sides counted their losses.

Then the fight started off once more, but with a new twist. The Naga began to manipulate the waterways, stopping the fish from ever reaching the shore and thus stopping the Murloc’s only source of food, and making life increasingly difficult for the once-peaceful race.

This had huge negative impacts on the battle, and the Murlocs began to find it all but impossible to raise their children strong enough to fight. Even keeping healthy when in adulthood was difficult, and eventually a compromise was taken. The Murlocs began to search of alternative sources of food, hunting small numbers of rabbits and foraging in the adjacent forest.

This lasted them for a short while, but was obviously not a permanent solution. The fights continued and the Murloc’s losses tallied up. The children were once again taken and put to work in the Naga’s favour, thus making the captures even more devastating. The Naga once again began to raid the Murloc villages at night, and the tides were continually siphoned.

Even the band of Murlocs than had once previously fought in their kin’s favour was now losing fighters. Their leader was slain in combat, and the whole battle began to turn sour. The Naga had taken a foothold and the supplies were in their control. Only help from the outside could possibly turn this war back in the Murloc’s favour...
